Mountain Grape Root for Detoxification

Mountain Grape Root is a native plant that is traditionally known in the Northwest, as Oregon Grape Root.

I like to call it Rocky Mountain Grape Root, as I live in the Colorado Rocky Mountains where it grows throughout the pine and spruce forest floor. Mahonia Repens is the genus in the Rocky’s. Best to just call it Mountain Grape Root, Mahonia berberis or Mahonia Aquifolium which are in the Berberidaceae family and grows all over North America.

Mountain Grape Root grows all over North America and is an abundant native plant treasure of powerful medicine. It has the ability to heal infections and outfections. It is anti-fungal, anti-microbial and anti-viral. It can clear heat in the body and stimulate the detoxification process.

The roots of Mountain Grape Root grow underground like long vines. These horizontal rhizomes spread throughout the forest, forming colonies of bushy flowering shrubs ranging in size from 2’-10’ high. The golden yellow roots contain the chemical constituent berberine which is extremely bitter and loaded with antimicrobial alkaloids. The clusters of yellow flowers bloom in early Spring and smell sweet in the air. The leaves are holly-like like and by the Fall the blue berries that resemble small grapes become ripe. The berries are considered edible, but are horribly sour.

The bitter compounds in berberine are anti-microbial and anti-fungal and stimulate bile release in the liver and gallbladder and is supportive to the gastrointestinal tract and the immune system.  It relieves congestion and supports the detoxification of the blood.

Bitter herbs support digestive enzymatic secretions and releases bile from the liver and gallbladder which is supportive for digesting fats.

Heat in the body appears as redness, inflammation, infection, yellow secretions. Mountain Grape Root is used for heat conditions like dry red eyes, rashes, constipation, and headaches. Its bitter properties promote the release of fluids including saliva, bile, and enzymes. The body’s detoxification process moves and clears heat from the body.

Mountain Grape Root is a Hepatic Herb for the liver and gall bladder as it cools, drains and detoxifies the body.  It is an Alterative Herb that purifies the blood and lymph by supporting the elimination processes at a cellular level, while also helping to transport strengthening nutrients into cells altering the body towards health.

Alterative herbs like Mountain Grape Root and Dandelion are often used in herbal formulas for people with heated skin afflictions. Our skin is an organ of protection and elimination and the liver is also an organ of elimination. When it is not functioning optimally other systems of elimination become overwhelmed.

A congested liver can contribute to the body detoxing through the skin causing rashes, eczema, acne and psoriasis.  Healthy elimination leads to healthy skin.  The antimicrobial properties of Mountain Grape Root can help to reduce and prevent heated skin conditions.  Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes an overgrowth of skin cells.  Mountain Grape Root has actually been shown to help slow the overproduction of skin cells characterized by psoriasis.
