Osha Root

Osha Root

The Healing Power of Osha Root

Native Americans observed how bears would dig up and eat Osha roots to cleanse after emerging from their long winter hibernation or when wounded or sick. Osha is often referred to as "Bear Medicine.”

When you dig up Osha root you can smell the volatile oils, including camphor that make it a powerful anti-viral and anti-bacterial herb. Osha tea and tincture are used for respiratory support, sore throat, cough, bronchitis, common cold, flu and pneumonia. I have often taken a few drops of Osha tincture before running and skiing in cold weather.  It is warming and protective for the lungs.

Some people use it for indigestion and for adapting to high altitudes. Osha is also used in oils and salves to be applied topically to the skin for wound healing.

Osha is a native plant that thrives at high elevations over 7,000' in the Rocky Mountains. This plant is a protected native plant and over harvesting can endanger its future population and existence.  The roots can be harvested in the Fall with great care and by practicing ethical wildcrafting.

Osha root in a tincture form is a powerful healing ally to have in your herbal medicine cabinet for bacterial, viral and respiratory ailments.
